On our datanet link, pages load in under a second (some images take a bit longer). Its quite a breath of fresh air, compared to loading wikipedia over our international link. The project for this version of wikipedia was done by the Wikimedia foundation and SOS Children UK. Its mainly aimed at children who follow the British curriculum, which makes it pretty usefull for people in secondary schools in Uganda. Basically, if you cram all of this, you will probably pass. Off course, the most interesting page is: http://schoolwiki.mountbatten.net/wp/u/Uganda.htm (disclaimer: we didnt write the content, we just provide this as a free service. Credits go to Peter Scott, who helped obtaining the original file, and Datanet, for being the most kick-ass ISP in Uganda, providing us with a 1MB! local link. If you are not in Uganda, or if you are on a VSAT connecion, its a very bad idea to visit this site. The original wikipedia is much much faster for you: http://www.wikipedia.org and you are not wasting our precious bandwidth, too) regardless of all that, just enjoy. sorry for crossposting, please forward to anyone in Uganda who might be interested. please forward the message intact. rgds, Reinier Battenberg Director Mountbatten Ltd. +256 782 801 749 www.mountbatten.net Be a professional website builder: www.easysites.ug From reinier.battenberg at mountbatten.net Wed Apr 15 09:46:08 2009 From: reinier.battenberg at mountbatten.net (Reinier Battenberg) Date: Wed, 15 Apr 2009 09:46:08 +0300 Subject: [UIXP Techies] magic Message-ID: <200904150946.08490.reinier.battenberg@mountbatten.net> (sorry, this message is going to come twice) Hi, Currently, the Datanet link to the UIXP is down, *and* the AfricaOnline link to the UIXP is down (according to the stats server) Yet, I am able to see the stats on http://stats.uixp.co.ug, which is a server that is physically inside the UIXP. I have checked our UIXP router and can confirm that the IP address 194.153.153.18 is not reachable from within that router. Additionally the BGP status is 'Active' which is a result of that. If the stats are showing traffic throughput for AFOL then I would think the following: 1. Seeing the stats are there are these the right stats monitoring the right port (AFOL)? 2. If so, then it would appear to me the AFOL router is indeed up and it could only be the configuration or router current status preventing it from advertizing their prefixes to peers. AFOL only one to confirm really.. 3. Is this only to DATANET or to others as well? MTN, INFOCOM, etc? Your trace shows your sent out over DATANET's internet pipe cause our router doesn't know of more specific routes towards AFOL. Dynamic routing is "tell your friend what you have and what you know'. AFOL isn't telling his friend (DATANET and possibly other peers) what they know so friend(s) can't reach AFOL over shortest path (in this case). They may need to reboot it, clear their BGP peers to get it back operational.. depends on what they find inside..
